Guest conductor : Peter Whelan, Bassoon and harpsichord

When Handel arrived in Dublin at the end of 1741, he was able to count on the services of musicians belonging to the “Irish State Musick,” as the orchestra of Dublin Castle was known. They were the ones that took part in the premiere performances of his Messiah, and it was in their company that Handel was able to gauge Ireland’s rich musical life. Our program will bring to life works from this melting pot of English, French, and Italian musical traditions. For the occasion, Arion is pleased to welcome for the first time in Canada the talented Irish bassoonist, harpsichordist, and conductor Peter Whelan, “as exciting a live wire as Ireland has produced in the world of period performance” (The Irish Times).
